European Capital One

1996

Capital One in the UK began when Rob Habgood (US team) flies into London in and sets up Capital One's UK office in the second bedroom of his London flat.

The first product test takes place in July 1996 and over 4,000 customers are acquired. By September, the UK office relocated to London's West End.

By December, Capital One has 11 staff on the UK payroll.

1997

The first three graduates join in September. At this time, the UK credit card market is dominated by a few large with high APRs.

1998

Move to Nottingham and a derelict print works, refurbished as Trent House.. In July, the Rt. Hon. John Prescott MP officially opens the building suitable for over 900 associates (Capital One employees).

2000

Growth requires a new development that will be adjacent to the existing Nottingham-based Operations Centre. The new site is Loxley House. UK associate numbers exceed 1,000.

2001

Capital One is named as the 3rd ‘Best Place to work in the UK’ by the Sunday Times.

Number of UK associates reach 2,200. Capital One forces a change in the market, even the most traditional banks offer low rate balance-transfer cards. The market has changed, and Capital One continue to push the boundaries of both our business and the wider market by encouraging recruits to design new products for new markets.

By 2001 the company is a success and its business strategy can work on an international scale, forever changing, growing and diversifying. Phenomenal growth pays testament to the drive and energy of thier employees and sets the standard for those whom Capital One recruit.

2002

  • Capital One receives award for the 'workforce that made the biggest contribution to the community',
  •  Short-listed for Employer of the Year (UK)
  • Wins the Midland Variety Club 'Business in the Community' award.

2003 - 2014

"In 2004 Capital One was ranked as ‘America's most admired company’ in consumer credit by Fortune and appeared 12th on Training's list of ‘Top 100 training organisations’."

New Values evolve

Tthe Sunday Times and the Financial Times include the company in their top Employers list in 2014.

In 2014 Capital One also complete its buys HFS Loans. (now Capital One Home Loans)

2006 - 7

Capital One's acquires two banking institutions in the US made Capital One one of the largest Banks in the US

  • Hibernia / Texas Louisiana
  • North Fork New York, Capital One acquired it and its Melville, New York headquarters for $14.6 billion U.S

Capital One celebrate our 10 year Anniversary of being in the UK.

2015

  • Acquires Chevy Chase Bank. Capital One announced it would purchase Chevy Chase Bank for $520 million.

North Fork Bank and Superior Savings of New England, both subsidiaries of North Fork Bank corporation, rebranded Capital One Bank

 

2009

  • Brian Cole is Managing Director, UK. Brian became the Managing Director of the UK business in May 2009.
  • Ttop ten credit card issuer in both the UK and US
  • $147 billion in managed loans
  • 50 million world-wide customers
  • 27,000 employees.
